How to choose a Charlotte pool company with one question

Recognizing reliable pool companies

Charlotte pool builders
Many pool owners wonder how to choose a Charlotte pool company that is reliable and dependable. They hear first hand from neighbors and coworkers who seem to always be expressing dissatisfaction with their pool builders and poll contractors. Regardless if it is a concrete pool, a fiberglass in ground pool, or even an above ground pool; homeowners only have once chance to pick the right pool contractor to dig up their backyard.

Customers often ask the wrong questions

Of course, we have offered advice in previous articles, recommending that customers make sure that the contractor is licensed and insured. They should also ask specific questions about the construction project, such as when will it begin and how long will it take; but these questions do not get right to the heart of the matter. What you really want to know is how skilled and how reliable is this pool company?

The answer lies in one question… “Can I see your references?”

Pool Contractors references

Now the most important factor is how you ask this question. Prospective pool owners must understand that there is more involved than just asking for references. If a pool contractor is consulting with you and giving you a quote for your pool project. Most people will simply ask him for his reference list. Before asking for the reference list, ask him or her how many pools did they install last year? Most pool contractors are able to quickly give you the answer to this question.

Once the contractor has told you how many pools they built and maintained last year, then you ask the sixty-four thousand dollar question; which is, “May I see you reference list from last year?” If they installed 10 pools and only offer a list of five references, then you should assume that they have a 50% satisfaction rate. That is not great odds for the amount of money that you are going to lay down for pool construction and possibly years of regular maintenance afterwards.

Some pool contractors will try to convince you that they are not allowed to give out customer names due to privacy concerns. This is largely untrue unless all his customers are in the witness protection program. .Swimming pool owners have a deep appreciate for good service from their pool builder and will not hesitate to refer them to new customers. If a contractor refuses to give you the references you request, simply move on to someone else in the Charlotte area that is honest and confident with their business. Choosing the best contractor available will save you from unnecessary stress and lost money.

Avoid these critical mistakes with your Charlotte pool installation

Time to plan for pool installation

Pool installation
As we begin to venture out of our winter dens and snow bunkers, we turn our attention to plans for swimming pool installation. Remember those sweltering days of last summer? They are sure to return, no matter how cold and miserable it was just a few weeks ago. When the weather is warm, no one wants to spend all day behind closed doors. We cannot wait to get some leisure time where we can play golf, or go fishing, but there is nothing better than spending lazy afternoons bathing in the sun and cooling off in your own private pool.

Swimming pools carry more value on top of being a great way to relax. Properly designed and quality built pools can increase the market value of your home. Swimming pool installation is no light undertaking. In this article, we hope to help you avoid the mistakes that so many new pool owners have made over the years. Consider the following items on our list:

Overlooking safety measures

Swimming pools can be as dangerous as they are fun when owners overlook basic safety measures. The best pool builders will be insistent upon establishing safety features that meet or exceed local laws. This includes fencing and other barriers that should be minimal when you have the pool installed. There are other features that they can advise you about; such as drain covers or pool covers. When it comes to building swimming pools, safety is never to be overlooked.

Do not underestimate the mechanics

Close your eyes and imagine your pool… what do you see? You are probably envisioning crystal blue water, sparkling tile, and fantastic pool furniture. The important point here is that your pool must not only look good, it has to work well. Ask your contractor to explain your filtering and heating equipment, and why they chose that particular equipment. Your pool can only be enjoyed if it is working properly. A quality swimming pool can add up to 7 percent to the market value of your home.

Choosing your pool builders based on price alone

It is always wise to live within your means, and you should have a budget for your pool construction as well as your monthly or annual maintenance. However, if you choose your pool builders based on the cheapest estimate, your chances are greater that your pool construction will be sub-par. It is compulsory that you get bids and consultations from at least three pool contractors in order to get a good idea of the cost of building your swimming pool. Be sure to make your decision based upon the reputation of the company with the best customer referrals.

Safety features from the most reliable pool contractors in Charlotte

Designing a safe pool in Charlotte

Most reliable pool contractors
The most reliable pool contractors will make sure that your design includes important safety features because no responsible pool owner wants to see an accident occur. Alarmingly, the reality is that nearly 10 people drown every day in the United States. If you decide to become a pool owner, the most reliable pool builders in Charlotte will make sure that you know all the dangers of owning a pool. With this knowledge, you will be able to plan and design your pool with built in measures that will prevent accidents. The following are suggested safety features that should be integrated into your pool design:

Drain covers

Drain covers are extremely important because they prevent swimmers from getting trapped by the powerful suction created by the pool filter. Uncovered drains that suck water into your filter are most commonly at the bottom of your pool. If a swimmer is unaware of this suction and they put their body on top of the drain, they may end up stuck on the bottom of the pool. A simple drain cover is an extremely affordable way to prevent this accident from happening.

Perimeter fencing

A good fence does more than provide privacy. Your fence is the first line of defense in preventing access to your pool by people who should not be around or in it. Commonly, a four or five foot fence provides adequate protection. Pool owners need to be careful about young children wandering on to your property. A properly built fence should be effective in keeping them away from the pool. The gate should have locking latches in order to ensure that children cannot access the pool area without an adult.

Secondary safety fencing

Pool owners should install a mesh fence or a secondary fence that will effectively keep young children and toddlers away from the pool. These fences are portable and should be set up every time the pool is not in use. Mesh fences attach to strong anchored poles in your patio. This is a second layer of protection against someone accidentally falling into your pool.

Pool alarms

Pool alarms alert swimming pool owners when someone is in or around their pool or spa. This is a great way to get your attention when you are not near the water. There are many styles of pool alarms; your Charlotte pool company can help you to choose between sensors, door alarms and alarmed buoys that warn you when someone enters your pool.

Safety Covers

Not having a safety cover on your pool is like building a house without adding a roof. In addition to being a barrier that keeps people from falling into your pool, pool covers keep your pool clean from leaves and debris. They also provide a secure barrier between your pool and anyone who may fall in.

Pool covers can be made of both mesh and/or solid materials. Tight fitting covers prevent children from falling into your pool. Be sure to order a style in which a special tool is needed to release the springs that keep the cover safely in place.

Swimming pool tile is easier to clean than cement based surfaces and require less maintenance.

The importance of waterline tiles

In addition to adding a final finishing touch for your pool, pool tiles can also help to make the water appear deep blue through a combination of aqua marine hues. Waterline tiles are easily cleaned, so you can avoid the “bathtub ring” that is caused by swimmers wearing suntan lotion, cosmetics, and hair care products. Swimming pool tiles are also used to avoid a dry, washed out area between the coping and the water. Tiles are much easier to clean than cement based or plaster surfaces. Completely covering a pool with tile is certainly regarded as a premium finish for concrete pools. Tiles are extremely durable, and they offer countless design choices. In addition to looking fantastic and being easy to maintain, a pool that is lined with tile is gentle on your feet due to its silky smoothness. The most commonly used types of tiles are glass and glazed ceramic.

Guidelines for tile installation for your Charlotte pool or deck

Installing tile in your new or refurbished pool

Tile installation for your pool or deck
Waterline tile installation for your pool or deck will is one of the most affordable ways to renovate pools in the Charlotte and Concord areas. Waterline tile accents the surface of the water in a swimming pool or spa; it also serves a practical function in helping you keep your pool looking crystal clear. Ceramic waterline tiles are purposely placed to extend just below the waterline.

For plaster pools, it is advisable that you contact professional pool contractors to install the tiles. If your pool or spa is made of fiberglass, it is possible for a handy homeowner to install the tiles. In either case, contact one of the Charlotte pool companies for an estimate. You may discover that the cost of a professional installer is well worth the money. If you should choose to attempt your own installation of glass tiles, consider the following tips for proper installation.

Preparation

Measure the entire pool or spa to determine the amount of materials you will need. Measure the distance from the upper lip of the pool deck to 2 inches below the waterline. Take the measurements to your pool tile supplier and they can help you determine how much tile and grout you will need. They can also help you with colors and designs that are available. The next step is to drain the pool or spa until it is 6 inches below the waterline.  Be sure to close the drain valve. Remove any dust, contaminants, or moisture from the exposed area with clean rags.

Installing the Tiles

You will bond the individual tiles or the tile mosaic patterns to the pool using a tube of silicone adhesive in a caulking gun. Start at one of the inside corners and apply the silicone adhesive on the back of the tiles in a zigzag pattern from corner to corner. Press the tiles into place. Make sure that they are even with the upper edge of the pool. This ensures that the tiles are perfectly vertical. Secure the tiles or mosaic with 2-inch masking tape on the tile and onto the upper surface of the pool edge.

Continue to install the tiles edge to edge along every side of the pool, keeping the upper edges aligned with the top edge of the pool. Measure and cut a custom tile for the end of each row. You will need to rent a ceramic tile cutter for this project. Smooth the cut tiles with a sanding block before you install them. Repeat the procedure and install waterline tiles to a level that is two inches below the natural waterline. Allow the silicone adhesive to dry for at least 24 hours, and remove the strips of masking tape from each tile and the edge of the pool. Do not leave the masking tape on in direct sunlight or in rainy weather, or you will have a tedious project removing the masking tape.

Seaming the tiles

Install a tube of silicone sealant in your caulking gun. Cut a 1/8-inch opening in the tip. Apply the sealant using an upward motion with the caulking gun, then with the tip of your finger in a rag, smooth the seam and remove any excess sealant. Repeat this procedure for every seam between each tile. This includes the application of a uniform bead of sealant along the upper edge of the topside of the pool. Allow the sealant to cure for 24 hours before refilling the pool or spa to the waterline.
