Refurbishing concrete pool decks

New Charlotte Pool
The extremes of winter cold and summer heat will cause your new pool deck to crack and warp over time, especially if your pool deck is concrete. The tiny cracks that form will only become worse because water gets in them and then freezes. This forces the cracks to open wider and the surface of the concrete can spall (break and flake into small fragments). If the situation goes uncorrected, you may need to refurbish or repair your entire concrete pool deck. This is why it is important for pool owners to promptly repair small problems so that they will be able to keep their concrete pool deck in great shape for a long time. In the event that you need to repair a crack in your concrete pool deck, there is only one right way to do it.  Hopefully, we can offer tips to make the job simple and affordable for you. It is also advisable that you discuss any necessary repairs with your Charlotte pool company.

Prepare the surface

Once you have made an inspection and identified the minor cracks that need repair, you will need to prepare the surface by cleaning the crack and a few inches surrounding the area to be repaired. Use a biodegradable detergent to make hot, soapy water and scrub the area with a brush in order to degrease the surface and remove debris. Scrub the repair areas well, rinse thoroughly. Once everything has dried, you should have a clean surface that will allow for maximum adhesion.

Lay the cement

Once your surface is clean, you can begin patching the cracks with concrete. Mix the concrete in small batches so that it will not harden or stiffen before you can use it. Lay it into the crack with a trowel or knife, just as you would with spackle. Scrape away excess patch mix, but be sure that you are properly filling the crack with the new cement. It is important that you force as much into the crack as possible because the concrete will shrink as it dries.

Epoxy sealant

Once you have filled the crack with concrete, you can now apply the epoxy sealant. The epoxy acts to waterproof and bond the area. Pour a reasonable amount onto the concrete patch and spread it evenly with a paint brush. Be sure to use the epoxy sealant to fill any of the tiny cracks that exist between your patch and the original concrete. Allow the epoxy sealant to dry thoroughly, and to cure, before you place your pool and deck back into service. Making minor repairs in your pool deck is relatively easy; however, if you should choose to let a professional do the work, consult with one of the well regarded Charlotte pool companies.
