Safety and beauty in a new pool deck- consult a Charlotte pool contractor and renovator

New pool deck
Proper paint and sealer can keep your new pool deck looking new for years. It is important to remember that pool decks need regular maintenance, especially concrete decks. A concrete pool deck pulls double duty by providing stability for the area surrounding your swimming pool, as well as being a versatile surface where you can customize the look and style of your pool decor. Constant changes in weather over a period of time will take its toll on a painted or sealed concrete deck. Before you even realize it, your pool deck will look less than spectacular. The concern is not just about aesthetics, the issue is also about safety. Worn and unpainted concrete can become slippery when it gets wet. Painting and sealing your concrete pool deck will last for years if you perform the right surface preparation and use proper choice for a paint and sealer.

Painting your pool deck

You can buy the best sealer and paint available, but if you do not clean your pool deck thoroughly, the work will not last at all. Be sure to sweep away all debris, dust, and dirt. Wash visible stains or spots with a cleanser and a scrub brush. Regular degreasing dish-washing soap or tri-sodium phosphate will work. Rinse the pool deck with a pressure washer and let it dry for a couple of days in warm weather; then sweep it again.

The next step is to apply a sealer before painting. Use a pump sprayer to apply an epoxy concrete sealer. Epoxy sealers are always two parts; be sure to mix them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It is important that you mix and handle the epoxy sealer properly. Once mixed, it must be applied within a certain amount of time. Spray the epoxy sealer uniformly on the concrete pool deck. Be careful not to step in it. Let it cure according to the recommendation on the label. This can be as long as 24 hours, so make sure you have good weather for a number of days in order to get the deck properly sealed.

After the epoxy has cured, you are ready to apply the concrete pool deck paint. Be sure that you use a pool deck paint and not concrete floor paint. Pool deck paint is specially formulated to bond to concrete, and is resistant to chlorine. Ask your pool supply dealer about nonskid additive for your concrete paint if you want a textured surface that is safer for poolside guests. Be sure that you spread the paint evenly, avoiding leaving thick edges where the roller overlaps. Let the first coat dry for at least 24 hours before applying another coat. If you would like to add a deep finished look, you can apply a clear deck sealer over the finished coat of paint.
