Professional tile installation for your pool or deck

Deciding on tile installation

Pool contractors working on tile installation in a swimming pool
Savvy pool owners realize that tile installation for your pool or deck can be an attractive and affordable way to bring color and detail to their pool. Mosaic tiles are most frequently used on pools because they easily curve with the pools that are irregularly shaped. In addition to pool deck enhancement, tiles may be used as a border at the water line, or they may be installed to cover every inch of the walls and floor of your pool. Before you design and install your new tiles, take into consideration that a swimming pool has many specific requirements for proper installation.

Selecting the Tiles

Ceramic tiles are actually clay tiles that are made from wet clay, known as slip. The tiles are glazed and fired in order to give them a waterproof surface. While ceramic tiles are always suitable for wet areas such as showers, bathrooms and kitchens, not all ceramic tiles are appropriate for pools. Swimming pool tiles are specially created because any cracks in the glaze would allow moisture to degrade the tile body. Swimming pool tile is either impervious or vitreous, which means that the tile will not absorb water even if the glaze was to crack. There is also a difference between tile that is impervious and tile that is vitreous. Impervious tiles are the best option because they will only absorb 0.5 percent of any moisture exposure, while vitreous tiles will absorb up to 3 percent.

Getting your new tiles

Your Charlotte pool company will ensure that your pool properly prepared before the tile installation begins. They will begin by washing down the pool floor and walls with a pressure washer in an effort to remove contaminants from the surfaces. This will ensure a better tile bond. Once the surface is dry, they will inspect the pool carefully, patching holes or cracks. It is possible that they will apply a waterproof membrane to the pool surface as an extra layer of protection for the tiles. Once the membrane has cured, the tiles can then be installed.

Choosing the best materials for your new pool deck

Building a new pool deck

New pool deck installation from Carolina Pool PlasteringA new pool deck is a great way to enhance your swimming pool, which is naturally the focal point of your backyard. Swimming pool decks can be built in a wide variety of materials, sizes, and styles. They are the perfect solution for creating an appealing gathering space for your guests. Swimming pool decks can make planning entertainment and parties much easier while providing a place for you to unwind after your guests have left. Let’s explore some of the most prevalent types of swimming pool decks:

Hardwood

Hardwood decks are most commonly constructed from teak and mahogany because these hardwoods are extremely durable while at the same time, beautiful and luxurious. Hardwoods are naturally equipped to handle rain and harsh or damp environments. Hardwoods have proven to be an environmentally friendly solution because most sources are harvested in forests that are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. Other choices for hardwood swimming pool decks include hardwoods like cedar, cypress and redwood. Cedar wood is predominately the choice on the west coast, so pricing may increase for pool decks that are built in the Charlotte area. Cypress is the most decay-resistant as well as being less costly than redwood. Another cost effective choice is pressure treated wood. This is the same material that is used for backyard decks and fencing. Do not be afraid of this low cost option, about 80 percent of all decks in the U.S. are constructed with pressure-treated wood. They are generally softer woods that have been chemically treated to resist termites and rot. Pressure treated wood is harvested from different pines or firs as a renewable resource.

Composite materials

Most composite material can be more expensive than wood swimming pool decks. However, the appeal for swimming pool owners is that composite decks are low-maintenance, thus, more economical once built. The drawback is that they can fade over time, but if cleaned on a regular basis, this process can be significantly reduced over several years.

Brick and stone

Brick and stone have been a central theme for pools and decks for a long time.  When it comes to renovation projects, brick and stone are growing in popularity because of the limitless shades and tones that look so good with water. Planning and design is important because brick can absorb heat and become extremely hot during the summer months. With regard to maintenance costs, brick and stone decks are relatively inexpensive. Natural stones create a luxurious setting that is more resistant to absorbing heat from the sun.

Maintaining your swimming pool deck

Keep new pool decks in top condition by creating a maintenance routine after it has been constructed. Treat wood decks with an oil sealer, and more basic woods can be stained or painted. You can also stain or repaint pressure-treated woods after a few months of weathering. Vinyl and composite decks should be cleaned according to manufacturer instructions. Re-staining and painting can be performed by most homeowners, or a Charlotte pool company can be hired for protective maintenance.

Making sure that your pool installation is in top shape for summer

A classic mistake in pool renovation

Carolina Pool Plastering swimming pool installation
Do not be caught off just because you have a fairly new pool installation. Every year new pool owners fall into the false security of overlooking maintenance needs for their new pool. We rarely think of pools as being used strenuously, but pools face severe elements just sitting in the sunlight or going through the winter cold. This means that every spring we need to get our swimming pool ready for the coming season. There are usually some things that need attention beyond the customary cleaning and water chemistry. If you have an older pool, you should probably start to think about renovations. At the very least, you will need to address any issues before they become serious and expensive.

Call on the best pool companies to renovation and install your pool

It is important to remember that the ground moves and shifts, this can cause settling or cracking in your pool. Be aware that the longer you put off addressing any structural issues, the more expensive it will be to fix the problem. The best course of action is to call in the best qualified pool builders to perform a comprehensive inspection. They will evaluate all the primary equipment such as the pool heater, filter pump, and drains. They will check the plumbing and the structure for leaks, or operational malfunctions.

Cosmetic versus structural issues

It is not advisable that you look for the cheapest solution for any problems, particularly structural leaks and defects. Failing to deal with the primary cause of the problem will only result in your pool condition becoming worse. Too many pool owners resort to cosmetic repairs that are less expensive in the short run, but could actually lead to an extended shut down of your pool later.

Addressing safety concerns

Every single safety concern must be addressed before you allow anyone to play or swim in the pool. Some of the most critical safety issues center around the condition of drain covers and any other covers where pool equipment creates suction. This is not an option; this is mandated by both state and federal laws. When it comes to safety, you cannot afford to cut corners. Ask you Charlotte pool company representative to inspect your security gate and pool covers along with structural and mechanical issues related to your pool.

Consider swimming pool construction and renovation when buying a home

Buying a house with a pool

Carolina Pool Plastering swimming pool construction and renovation
If you are thinking about buying a house with a pool, the swimming pool construction and renovation must weigh heavily into your decision. There are some critically important things you will need to know before you commit to buying the home. Keep in mind that a swimming pool is one of the most valuable and complex assets on the property. It is also the place where you, your family, and your friends will share some of the best times together with each other. On the other hand, if things are not right, your pool can become a headache of epic proportions.

Get a Professional Pool Inspection

It is important that you make an objective and critical decision when you buy a home with a pool. Home inspection is part of the buying process, but rather than trust a home inspector from the bank, it would be wise to hire a one of the top Charlotte pool companies to conduct a thorough inspection. Look for pool contractors that have been around for a long time, and who has experience with a wide variety of pools. Most buyers assume the home sale inspection includes the pool, but only in the rarest of cases. In reality, the majority of home inspection reports include a disclaimer for the pool and spa areas.

Test the equipment

When performing the pool inspection, your chosen pool company will test the overall operating condition of the pool and equipment. They will turn the equipment on to verify that it works; however, in the majority of cases, your inspector will have no legal right to take anything apart. Your pool contractors are allowed to pressure test the plumbing for possible leaks. Failing to do this may be setting you up for costly problems down the road. Before hiring a pool inspector, make sure that they will perform pressure testing of the pool plumbing. It would also be prudent to find out if their report includes a written estimate for any repairs that are deemed necessary in the event that you should purchase the home.

Settle the pool issues before closing

When you buy a home with a swimming pool, you are basically buying the pool “as is.” Your presale inspection will let you know exactly what you are getting yourself into. Armed with this information, you can make a price adjustment based upon any repairs or renovation required to restore the pool to operating condition. Arranging for money to be held in escrow for pool repair costs is an easy way to address the issues that may arise from your pool inspection.

Characteristics of the Charlotte’s best pool builders

Comparing pool contractors

Best pool builders of Carolina Pool Plastering working with project
Once you have decided to add a pool to your property, it is critical that you find the best pool builders for your project. Just like any other trade, pool contractors are not all the same. There are attributes that you should use to compare contractors and make your project an affordable and pleasant experience.

Pool company credentials

It would be foolish to take on a major project such as swimming pool construction with a contractor that is not properly licensed, and who does not have the necessary credentials, including insurance and bonding. However, being licensed is not the same as being reputable and dependable. You can check out the reputation of pool contractors by contacting the Better Business Bureau or by searching the online reviews.

Talk to references

Every pool builder will have a list of current and past customers who are willing to take a few minutes to share their experience with you. Ask them about every phase of construction and all the way to the end. Ask did they feel like they received the product that they actually chose. Listen to hear if there were any unresolved issues, or delays if something required follow up by the contractor.

Local pool builders with experience

Look for pool builders who have been in the community for many years. Local and regional pool contractors are familiar with the neighborhoods and work with all the local building department inspectors and Homeowner Associations. A pool contractor who has been in the business for a long time has very likely built just about every type of pool imaginable. Your pool design needs to be customized to your yard and your budget. This takes a contractor who is experienced and has a thorough understanding of pool design.

Dependable and reliable

Every industry has its share of troubles when it comes to shady contractors. Look for the pool companies that stand apart from the crowd. Do not be fooled by ad where a contractor claims to be the best. The best pool builders depend upon their reputation, the quality of their work, and their personal integrity to do their advertising. In the pool business, over 95% of the contractors are referred by a neighbor, co-worker, friend, or relative. Who you choose to build your pool makes a difference.

Easy tile repair for your pool or deck

Pool repair is inevitable

Carolina Pool Plastering crew doing tile repair
Sooner or later, the time will come for tile repair for your pool or deck as your tiles will begin to loosen, crack, or fall off. If you have had your pool for a long time, consider calling in pool companies to inspect your pool. The reason for this is because about every 20 years or so, a complete replacement of the pool tile may be necessary. As part of your regular maintenance, you can have your pool contractor perform simple repairs to re-attach tiles that are in disrepair.

However, if you like to perform your own pool maintenance, we will offer some tips so that with the use of some simple tools, you can make small tile repair jobs in a very short amount of time. Larger runs of several feet, or entire sides of the pool, are an indication that something has seriously deteriorated to the point that you will need to defer to your pool contractor.

Removing loose tile

Loose tile should be removed with a small flathead screwdriver or chisel. Remove the grout stuck on the sides of the tiles with small pliers or a small, sharp screwdriver. This includes any old grout that remains stuck to the edge of the tile that is still affixed to the pool wall.

Prepare the surface

Prepare the wall behind the tile by removing any loose or cracking material. If there are cracks in the surface of the pool wall behind the tile, they should be opened up and filled with hydraulic cement, be sure to push the cement as far into the crack as is possible. Look for large cracks in the wall, as these are the most common cause of the tile falling off. In cases where there is severe damage, call a pool builder as you should expect your tile repair to only last a year or two.

Apply the mortar

Mix an appropriate batch of thin set mortar. Wet the area that you will be filling with tile before applying the thin set. Make sure that your mix is at a spreadable consistency, similar to that of peanut butter. With a notched trowel, spread the mix evenly, in a thin coating. Some may drop in the pool, if it does not dissolve, you can use the pool brush to clean-up any clumps.

Spread enough mixture to cover no more than 12 square inches at a time. 6×6 tiles are fast and easy to set. Small mosaic tile will take more time. Press the pool tile firmly into the thin set bed until it squeezes out from behind. You will need to work fast, before the mortar starts to dry. It is best to set tiles during a cooler part of the day, or make some shade if necessary. Check your work every 10 minutes to make sure that tile pieces do not begin to slide down the wall. If larger tiles start to fall off, long pieces of duct tape can be used to help tape the tile in place temporarily.

Grout the tile

After the tile has been in place for 24 hours, use a waterproof tile grout to seal the space in between the tile. Thin set will not work well as grout; however, you can use pool plaster mix as well. With a flexible spreader, force the grout in between the tiles. After it has set up for 10-15 minutes, use some water and a gentle wiping motion to clean off the extra grout that has smeared onto the tiles. If necessary, after another 24 hours, you can use a scrub pad or brush to remove the haze and clean the tiles.

Glass mosaic tile installation for your pool or deck

Charlotte Pool contractors choose tile

Tile installation for your pool or deck
Complete tile installation for your pool or deck is regarded as a premium finish for concrete pools. Tiles are desired because they are extremely durable and are available in a countless number of design choices. In addition to looking fantastic, tiles are easy to maintain and are gentle to your hands and feet as you swim and play in a pool that is covered with silky smoothness. There are two types of tiles that are most commonly used; they are glass mosaic tiles and glazed ceramic tiles.

Glass mosaic tiles

Glass mosaic tiles are increasing in popularity for both swimming pools and spas. They are also used prominently for fountains, wading pools, and other poolside features. Mosaics tiles are so popular because of their wide choice of colors. They provide stunning visual effects with hues that simply are not available with the use of ceramic tiles, such as crystal, gold, or pearl. They are available in small sizes which seem to be the trend for the modern finishes used in homes today.

Pearl finish

Many swimming pool owners prefer a pearl version of glass tiles that feature a mother of pearl finish on the surface of each tile. When the tiles are viewed from different angles, the tiles reflect a rainbow of colors, bringing your pool to life. The pearl effect is obvious in every kind of light, even when the pool is in shade.

Crystal finish

Crystal glass mosaic tiles receive their color from a ceramic glaze on the back side of the tiles. This means that you are actually looking through clear glass to view the color, which gives the tiles a three dimensional effect. Just like the pearl mosaics, crystal glass tiles are smooth to touch. They also provide a modern and elegant appearance to your pool.

Many pool owners are concerned about the pool appearance and wonder whether you notice the grout lines with glass mosaics. Although there are more grout lines, they are not as noticeable as with larger tiles. The best comparison would be the visual impression of a checkered shirt. You see the large checks far easier than you can see small checks. In addition to being available in so many sizes and colors, mosaic tiles are often less expensive than glass tiles. With many contractors, they also demand a lower labor cost while using less expensive adhesives. Contact your Charlotte pool builder for all the details.

Deck drainage for your new pool deck

Drainage is crucial

New pool deck being installed by Carolina Pool Plastering
Part of our job is to help customers make the best decisions about their pool, and we want to address the question about deck drainage for your new pool deck. Are you aware that there needs to be a graded slope for your in-ground pool patio? In addition, you will need advice as to which direction the patio should slope. This leads to questions about how deck drain systems work, and what types of pool deck drain systems are available. Hopefully, in this article we will tackle these questions here in an effort to give you a better understanding of how deck drains for in-ground pools really work.

Determining pool deck slope

Pool decks are also known as pool patios. They need to slope at a rate of approximately one-quarter of an inch every foot. This means that a section of patio that is eight feet wide should fall around two inches in elevation. For obvious reasons, the pool deck needs to slope away from the pool. If this does not happen, rain water and splash water will wash debris into the pool on a steady basis. This makes it extremely hard to keep your pool clean and your water chemistry in balance. If your patio is surrounded by landscaping, that is an ideal situation to allow the water to run directly of the patio into the surrounding grounds as long as that water has adequate drainage. If the water cannot be adequately absorbed by the surrounding landscaping, a french drain will usually be the best solution to the problem.

If you pool patio abuts against your house, or some other structure, there are several options available. Perhaps you can have your pool deck designed to slope away from the house as well as the pool. This can be done in two ways; one is to form a valley in the middle of the patio field. In this case the pool deck is designed to channel water so that it will naturally flow away from the center and off the sides. The other option is for a drain to be installed in the valley which can be used to carry water away from the patio through a drain pipe to a more appropriate spot for runoff to dissipate. Some lot elevations will make it more feasible to have the patio fall all the way to the house where we can place a strip drain that will sufficiently collect and divert the water.

Spot drains versus strip drains

There are generally two types of deck drains used for most pool deck projects, primarily there are strip drains and spot drains. Strip drains, which are also referred to as trench drains, are narrow grates are installed the length of the lowest elevation on the slope; though which water trickles, and then flows through an in-ground trough away from the patio. Strip drains are ideal for placement against a house or structure, and are also commonly used in the valleys we mentioned above. Spot drains are typically round single drains, similar to those you will find in a shower stall, that are connected underground by PVC pipe that carries the water away from the pool deck. Spot drains are perfect in those areas where long strip drains are not possible. This makes them ideal for free form and odd shaped pool decks.

How to choose a Charlotte pool company for salt cell maintenance

Pool contractors for salt water pools

Charlotte pool contractors of Carolina Pool Plastering working
If you have not chosen one, you need to know how to choose a Charlotte pool company to maintain your salt water swimming pool. Salt water pools are different from traditional chlorine pools because they use salt to generate chlorine, instead of introducing pure chlorine directly into the pool. Salt water pools use a chlorine generator, in which water passes through an electronic cell that produces the compound sodium hypochlorite, or liquid chlorine. It is important to understand that salt water pools are not chlorine free. They manufacture their own chlorine, and they carry lots of benefits for pool owners.

Salt cell required maintenance

Chemical reactions that take place in the electrical unit can cause quite a bit of buildup of scale and chemical by products. The majority of salt cell units have a self cleaning feature. They are designed to reverse the polarity of the voltage in the cell, which cleans off scale and buildup off of the cell plates. If your salt cell unit does not have a self cleaning feature, at the end of the season, you can use a mild solution of muriatic acid to clean the cell.

During the off season, salt is poured directly into the deep end of your pool. Using your extension pole with a brush head, stir any salt that is on the floor of the pool until it is fully dissolved. Pool maintenance is crucial because this keeps your chlorine at its most effective level and your pool is at its healthiest for swimmers. Alkalinity, pH, calcium and acid levels all need to be monitored regularly and maintained at proper levels. An experienced Charlotte pool contractor can determine the best levels and maintenance schedule for your pool. They can ensure that your salt system produces the right amount of chlorine per hour.

Benefits of salt water pools

Most pool owners depend on salt water pools because they provide improved water quality and greater comfort for swimmers. Salt water swimming pools are also significantly less expensive to operate than conventional pools. You will save money every month because you will no longer need to buy chlorine. Most people who purchase or convert to salt water pools discover that it takes about 2 to 3 years in order for the system to pay for itself. Additionally, swimmers who are sensitive to the chlorine in conventional pools do not experience the same sensitivity in salt water pools. When all is said and done, salt water pools improve your quality of life while saving you money.
